【My outline of The Glass Castle】

 Intro

This paper wil explore “The Glass Castle” written by Jeannette Walls mainly about the independence of the main character called Jeannette. The theme of this paper is why she is so independent although she was young? Since this story is separated into two-part, the first paragraph mentions the first part of her adulthood, and the second and third paragraphs mention the second one her childhood comparing both of her ages.

    • Told or explain the doctor and nurse to why she has alot of  injure

    • Just looking at the action of the nurse that write something down on the clipboard, she felt something and ask her “what was wrong?”

             What struck me most when I read Chapter 2 was that she doesn't look only 3 years old, as the nurse and doctor in the story also said “You are so smart and could read as well as a six years old.” Making a hotdog herself, not just crying out but shrieking “help me” when she suffered a burn was a sentent that showed she was independent. Of course she is excellent, but it is also true that she is placed in an environment where she has to be. In addition to this, her mother always says you're mature for your age. When I read this sentence, I recognize it as a parental ego, not as a way to praise and develop the child at all. If parents tell their daughters it, they can make their children think that the average 3 year old is supposed to make her own food, and it is the mother less task at home for her to do. 【Reaction to Chapter 1】

When I read this first time, I wondered why the level of happiness [like what is rich or poor, what situation is fulfilled] is different, although their relationship is just parent and daughter. However through yesterday’s class, I found something that gives me a clue to the answer. In my opinion, If we take the Japanese way of thinking, children are raised according to their mother's way of thinking, so they often think basically the same way. On the other hand, since this story was written by the author in the US, I saw this as a manifestation of personal independence. In the third paragraph, she was reluctant to reveal the secret which is her mother is like a homeless person. So it means that her mother is someone she wants to hide and does not want people to know about. From this statement, I grasped that for her, her mother was an entity that she wanted to disconnect from her. As I read through Chapter 1, she even attempts to help her mother financially. 【My first impression of Yale】

          My first impression of Yale was “Friendly” In my opinion, it’s an experience we can't have in Japan. I have met many occasions feeling ‘friendly’, although I've only been in the US for three days.  The first scene was when I arrived at the Yale check-in center. While one staff member was showing me how to check in, the others were chatting over eating apples or granola bars! The informal atmosphere relieved me, as I was nervous about living abroad for the first time outside of travel. After that, most happened in the dining room. On the first day, I couldn’t find where the dining room is and when I asked a girl nearby, she answered that “we're just heading to the dining room too, so follow us!” as a result we ate together.
